April 14-17th 2020 The Spanish Flu 1918-1920 a Review.

Happy Tuesday Everyone :)

I hope that you all had a wonderful and restful Easter weekend.

I hope that you are all safe and well and that you were able to retrieve your Socials Text Books from school last week. If you didn't again, please check last week's blog posts as Mr. K is offering time on a case by case basis to obtain your materials from the school if you so require. I will also be providing PDF copies of the text each week (as required) within Teams - within the 'files' and 'assignments' sections via the top toolbar in Teams.

So - how to begin (again) with continuing to teach Socials/History during this unprecedented time in history?

Well - I know that we just finished up a review of the last global pandemic - the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu pandemic the last day prior to Spring Break - (timely right?) and considering the place that we are at in history right now (re: Covid19) - let's spend a little more time on this last world wide global pandemic - from a local Revelstoke perspective.

Silver Lining: The world has seen global pandemic's before :) It's not ideal - but - here we are. Part of a major historical event.

Your tasks for this week:

1. Be sure that you can access Office 365 Teams. We will be having our first Live Class on Thursday April 16th 2020 at 1pm PST. I will send out an email tomorrow with details and you should also receive a notification to your new Office 365 outlook account. Again, if you having ANY issues with 365 email me at ahathorn@sd19.bc.ca

During this class we will be reviewing, via screenshare, Teams, our Class Notebook, your Student Folders within Class Notebook and our syllabus for the remainder of the semester :) If you are unable to attend the live class the class recording will be housed within Teams - files. I do expect though that you will do your best to attend live if at all possible.

2. Your classwork for this week:

Due by Friday of this week - to complete the below article review with subsequent questions.

Re: The Article Review Questions: Please answer in full sentence form.
Please note: Question’s 7 & 8 are paragraph answer questions.

1.   Where did the Spanish Flu 1918-2020 originate? Theories?

2.   What is the significance (re: media reporting) regarding the fact that Spain (at the time of the outbreak) was a neutral country during (WW1)?

3.   Could the pandemic have started in North America? If so – why would the media (at the time) not have reported on it?

4.   What was Revelstoke’s population at the time of the Spanish Flu pandemic?

5.   Who else assisted nurses during the time of the Spanish Flu in Revelstoke?

6.   How did Revelstoke celebrate the end of the war in 1918?  Do you believe this had positive or negative effects? Why?

7.   How do you believe that the current Covid19 pandemic will be remembered in history?

8.   Many newspaper outlets are closing (both their print and online reporting) during Covid19 – what other sources of information do you believe that people will look back to when it comes to remembering this current and significant time in world history?

Update: Once complete please upload your answers to ‘Teams’ > General > Assignments.

You will note that you can simply click on the Assignment in this area and fill in your answers right on the questions document in the 'Assignments' area.
