Pg 177 - Recall/Reflect/Respond

Group Work Assignment:

Question 3 - Create a web diagram to illustrate ALL the causes of WW1 on App - My Popplet.

Include both long-term conditions and short-term causes.

Long-Term Conditions:

Pg. 174-175

Imperialism: The policy of extending the power of one country over other countries through military force or economic control.
Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Germany and Russia were imperial powers.
In 1914 Britain controlled 25% of the world's territory and people.

Militarism: Using military force to defend or promote a country's interest. In anticipation of having to protect themselves European countries spent large sum's on their militaries.
Up to WW1 Britain had the largest navy in the world and Russia had the world's largest army. Germany was racing to catch up to both.
Increased tech up-leveled everything.

Alliances & The Balance of Power: Countries often formed alliances to strengthen their position in the world. Prior to WW1 many European countries formed alliances to try and maintain a balance of power.

Imperial focus and conflicting values led to two main alliances

The Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy.

The Triple Entente: France, Russia, Britain

Nationalism: Excessive pride in one's own nation - growing in the years leading up to WW1.

Show which causes are related to others. Explain your connections.

Causes - Austria-Hungary at the time home to 50 million Austrians, Hungarians, Bosnians and Ukrainians. Many groups wanted their own countries.

Short Term Causes:

The political assassination of the Archduke in Sarajevo by a Serbian (who represented Serbian's who wanted to be liberated from Austrian control). After the assassination Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia had promised to help Serbia - and if Russia was involved - so was France and Britain by default. Germany then came to support Austria-Hungary as part of their alliance. = gong show/war in much of Europe as of August 1914.

Pg 176. Cause and Consequence - What factors besides patriotism, might have motivated so many Canadian's to sign up so quickly?

A: Many options here - The prior to WW 1 economic depression, the call to adventure, courage, hero mentality, personal satisfaction, masculine societal expectations, desire to change one's status in Canadian society - women, people of colour, first nations.
